Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site
Welcome to England’s only Natural World Heritage Site
The Jurassic Coast, spanning from Orcombe Point in Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, is a stunning landscape with globally important geology. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2001, showcases 185 million years of Earth’s history through its diverse rocks and fossils. Explore dramatic coastal features like towering sea stacks, winding beaches, and epic landslides. Discover the evolution of life and the natural processes that shape our world.
Why do our rocks and fossils matter?
Along the Jurassic Coast’s unique coastline, colourful rock layers reveal profound environmental changes over millions of years. Fossils of extinct creatures offer new perspectives on life on Earth. Rock falls, landslides, and storm-battered beaches provide insights into the coastline’s evolution.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast’s geology is of global importance and boasts a rich local heritage and social history, making it a valuable resource for communities along the coast.
According to UNESCO the geological heritage of the Jurassic Coast is ‘so exceptional as to transcend national boundaries and to be of common importance for present and future generations of all humanity’.
