  • Thank you to our members who joined the online DCF Annual Meeting in June – we had a great attendance with nearly 70 members joining us and we really hope you found it as enjoyable and informative as we did. The only thing missing was the all-important chance for members to network and the lunch! We’d also like to thank all our speakers for taking the time to share their work with us. We had some fantastic feedback about the morning and if you didn’t manage to attend or wanted to follow up on anything then you can view the presentation slides and meeting recording HERE.
  • DCF are hosting online engagement events with BCP Council and New Forest District Council asking local people to get involved in the development of a new Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Strategy for Christchurch Bay and Harbour. The strategy will guide how the risk of flooding and erosion along the frontage of Christchurch Bay, from Hengistbury Head Long Groyne to Hurst Spit, encompassing Christchurch Harbour, will be sustainably managed for the next 100 years.

FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT WORK

  • Martin has been working on developing a bid to the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme to develop the concept of an Aquaculture Innovation Centre, which aligns with a critical action defined in the English Aquaculture Strategy, released by Seafish in November 2020. As part of this he has been talking to partners about a English Aquaculture Innovation Centre (EAIC) and is currently inviting quotes to undertake developing the business model to be able to work towards the later phase of making a EAIC in Dorset a reality.
  • The South West Aquaculture Network (SWAN) meeting (chaired by Martin) is coming up on July 20th, if you would like to attend and have not received an invite, please contact Martin.
  • As usual Martin is available to help with Fisheries and Seafood Scheme applications. If you have a bid that you need help with…you know what to do! Contact him at martin.martin.sutcliffe@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk or 01305 224766.

SUSTAINABLE SWANAGE

  • Sustainable Swanage held an open meeting on the 29thDiscussion included the topical issues of gardening with wildlife in mind, pesticide use and with the focus on air pollution (Clean Air Day was on 17th June!)
  • Volunteer opportunities with Sustainable Swanage – There are different levels of involvement for volunteers, from a commitment to leading a sub-group and being on our steering group, to helping for one day on a practical project such as tree planting, or simply supporting a campaign. See here for information on the roles available.
  • Magnificent Meadows – this month is all about nature and these bountiful summer months. We are asking you to please report your wildlife sightings from in and around Swanage to us and help build a picture of how nature is faring in our town. Join our Wildlife Watch Facebook group too for more info on what others are seeing. Find out more here
